How does WirelessMail treat my appointments and invitations, and how can I access my calendar?

Calendar invitations are sent to your handheld inbox just like any other emails. WirelessMail preserves all the calendar event header information, which is recognizable by some handhelds such as BlackBerries. On a BlackBerry, for example, you can opt to "Accept" or "Reject" a calendar invitation right on the handheld, which will add it to the handheld calendar. Later, if you sync with the BlackBerry desktop software, that calendar event will then show up in your Lotus Notes calendar.

For real-time wireless access to your calendar entries, here are three WirelessMail features:

  • You can have WirelessMail automatically send you an email each morning with your day's calendar events. From your Notes Inbox, choose Actions\WirelessMail\Configuration.... Click the "Edit address profile..." button, then enable the feature in the Schedule tab.
  • You can optionally have WirelessMail send an email notification to your handheld before each calendar event where you have checked the notify box. From your Notes Inbox, choose Actions\WirelessMail\Configuration.... Click the "Edit address profile..." button, then enable the feature in the Schedule tab.
  • You can query your calendar remotely at any time for all appointments on any date or between any two dates. In the Actions tab of the WirelessMail Configuration settings, check "Allow remote control" and enter any password. Then from your mobile device, you can send an email to yourself with the subject text wm.cal and the password in the body field. This shows all calendar events for the next 7 days. Subject text wm.cal 7/1 7/15 returns all calendar events between those two dates.

For true calendar synchronization:

  • BlackBerry users can use the BlackBerry desktop sync software and cable/cradle included in the box with your BlackBerry handheld. This will sync your calendar and contacts when you are at your workstation. This supplements WirelessMail's sending live incoming email to the handheld's inbox wirelessly.
  • Palm users can sync calendar and contact information when connected to the workstation using IBM EasySync software, purchased separately.
  • iPhone users may find success with this third-party combination of tools which work through iCal.
